On 23rd March 2024, the 5th International Metallurgy Innovation Symposium was hold by SKLAM in Beijing with the support of China Iron and Steel Association and Chinese Society for Metals, in order to actively respond to the national 14th Five-Year Plan and the reply of President Jinping Xi.

The theme of the Symposium is: Green and Low-carbon Metallurgy. Eleven global academicians and 10 leading experts were invited for attendance, and 14 keynote reports were made offline and online. There was a total of more than 400 participants from famous universities, research institutes and industries in the world, including Academician Xinping Mao, Qinrui Yue, Tao Jiang, Zhongwei Zhao, Hongmin Zhu and Hongbiao Dong, and also Professor Joohyun Park from Hanyang University, Vasant Kumar from the University of Cambridge, Ulrich Krupp from RWTH, and Zhengyi Jiang from the University of Wollongong. Vice President of USTB, Prof Shuqing Jiao, hosted the Symposium.

President Renshu Yang delivered the opening speech; he said that in line with the purpose of "strengthening exchanges, cooperation and innovation", the symposium is to deepen the exchanges between the parties in the field of industry, to explore high-efficiency and low-consumption metallurgy, intelligent manufacturing, energy conservation and emission reduction, intelligent manufacturing and other fields of cutting-edge technology, to build an international cooperation and exchange platform. The symposium further promotes international exchanges and cooperation among universities, research institutes, and iron and steel enterprises in the field of metallurgical integration and innovation; the symposium also promotes the improvement of scientific research levels, facilitate the rapid development of relevant disciplines in the University of Science and Technology Beijing, and make new contributions to the innovation capability of the country in the field of ferrous metallurgy.

Chao Feng, Vice secretary of China Iron and Steel Association, congratulated on the host of the Symposium and acknowledged the significance of the symposium. He pointed out that it is necessary to strengthen the cooperation of enterprises, industry associations and colleges through the exchange platform of Metallurgical Innovation, jointly create a better environment and conditions for the integration of production and education, promote the sharing and optimal allocation of policies, technologies and talents, and provide strong support for the green, low-carbon and sustainable development of metallurgical industry.

Dr. Xinjiang Wang, Secretary of Chinese Society for Metals, said that China's steel industry as a whole has entered a new round of adjustment cycle, and the development of the industry has encountered unprecedented challenges. As a scientific and technological organization serving the steel industry, the Chinese Society for Metals will provide services and help for research talents in the steel industry. He hoped that the participants could promote the exchanges and cooperation between enterprises and universities with the help of the symposium as an exchange platform.

Academician Qingrui Yue, director of SKLAM, gave an open-speech as well, and said that the iron and steel industry, as an important pillar industry of the national economy, plays a pivotal role in promoting economic development and social progress. In recent years, China's steel industry, which has experienced many "pains" of transformation and upgrading, is promoting the gradual shift from capacity control to energy consumption and carbon emission constraints. The low-carbon transformation of China's steel industry has entered a critical period and a critical period. He pointed out that the symposium, with the theme of "green and low-carbon metallurgy", aims to gather the wisdom and strength of the global metallurgical field, jointly explore the path of innovation and development of the metallurgical industry, around metallurgy, resources, energy, to explore "carbon peak, carbon neutral", high efficiency and low consumption, green metallurgy and other fields of cutting-edge technology, to build a platform for international cooperation and exchange. He hopes to take the opportunity of this forum to discuss with colleagues the new trends, new challenges and new opportunities in the development of the metallurgical industry, and work together to promote the prosperity and development of the global iron and steel industry.
